How to choose a suitable mixer for your project?
Concrete mixers will provide greater productivity and an excellent mixing result in construction projects in your home or large-scale construction works. Let's get to know this equipment in detail.
Uses and Types of Mixers
Concrete mixers are machines used in construction to obtain homogeneous mixtures and avoid the physical effort of beating the concrete components, speeding up the operation with better mixing results and performance.
A wide variety of mixers are available in the market, depending on their operating mechanism and transportability.
-
Fixed mixers: These are those in which concrete is produced in a plant for one or several construction sites and then transported in specialized trucks.
-
Automatic Mixers: These are perfect for large projects with high production volume.
-
Portable mixers: These mixers are characterized by being light machines equipped with tires so that they can be transported and operated through electric, gasoline, or diesel engines.
We point out each of the parts that make up this equipment:
-
Drum: Also called hopper is the container where the materials are deposited, it rotates 360° to facilitate the discharge when the mixture is ready, and its size depends on the capacity in liters.
-
Crown: It is the ring on the outside of the drum. This is part of the gear. It transmits energy with pinion and the reducer. This energy is moved from the motor to the drum. It requires maintenance.
-
Motor: Transmits all the energy to the drum transforming the mechanical energy capable of doing work.
-
Flywheel: it is used to direct the drum and make it move without too much effort.
-
Frame: it is the structure that supports the movement and weight of the drum and possible mixtures.

What should you consider when choosing a mixer?
When choosing a concrete mixer, it is necessary to take into account the intended use, the power of the machine, the mixing capacity in liters, the type of engine, and the choice will depend on the project requirements and budget.
Intended use and machine capacity
Concrete Mixers are commonly used to mix gravel, sand, and water components of concrete. However, due to the drum material, they are used to mix other materials in the industrial and agro-industrial sectors, such as seeds and chemicals, achieving excellent results.
For its primary use, in domestic applications, light equipment is required, easy to transport and operate, and the capacity of the mixer can be between 60 and 150 ltr since the volume of material to be mixed would be enough for a small project.
If the mixer is to be used for heavy-duty construction sites, the machine must be robust, with a durable design, but without losing its portable characteristic. Depending on the scale of the project, the capacity can range from 160 Ltr up to 500 Ltr, i.e., approximately half a lump to 2 lumps.
Power and engine
The power is the force that the machine expends to perform the mixing; therefore, the performance depends on the machine's ability.
220W of power is sufficient for domestic applications, although more time is needed for mixing.
A machine offering 550W of power or more for heavy use guarantees good performance.
How to prepare concrete in a mixer?
Concrete is made of gravel, sand, water, and cement. It is malleable in its liquid form and highly resistant in its solid state.
Its preparation largely depends on the characteristics of the structure being built, which will determine the quantities of each of the ingredients in the mixture.
Generally, the proportion is 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 3 parts gravel. To a 50 kg bag of cement, 25 Ltr of water will be added.
The preparation in the mixer is as follows:
-
Check that the machine is clean and free of material residues; otherwise, clean it.
-
Turn on the mixer and check that it is working correctly.
-
Place the gravel in the mixer and shake it.
-
Add half of the water and add the cement.
-
Let mix for half a minute.
-
Add the sand and the rest of the water gradually
-
Allow mixing for 3 minutes
-
The amount of water may decrease if the gravel and sand are wet.
-
The strength and durability will be greater if as little water as possible is placed.
-
To discharge the concrete, it is important to remove the lock and turn the tiller upside down.
Common Mistakes
-
Insert the bag of cement, including the paper bag, into the mixer.
-
Add more water to the mix.
-
Placing the materials in disorder inside the mixer.
-
Introduce all the materials at the same time inside the mixer.
-
Not respecting the mixing time of the materials.
